But, how are their research work progressing ?

This week, let’s talk about Lovasoa’s work.

Within her research on the evaluation of plastic waste in the marine environment and the study of the quality of biosourced plastics from seaweed, RAHARINAIVO Lovasoa Rina has mainly done her field work and one part of her laboratory work during her second year of thesis (July 2021-July 2022). Her first year was a bit difficult because of the Covid19 pandemic and focused on defining and refining her research questions, on training at the University of Mons (UMons) and writing of research protocols. She mentioned those information during her presentation at the project restitution workshop held on 02/09/2022 at the Institut Halieutique et des Sciences Marines (IH.SM) -Toliara, Madagascar.

Lovasoa started her third year at UMons to carry out the second part of her laboratory work which requires more sophisticated equipment for observation and analysis of the micro-plastics. At the same time, she is beginning the analysis of the collected data from Madagascar and is presenting her project through communications of her results at international scientific conferences.

In this regard, she attended the 11th edition of Researchers’ Tuesday to present a poster on “Vertical distribution of microplastics in sea off Sarodrano, southwestern Madagascar”. It was an internal event organized by UMons on 26/09/2022 to allow PhD students to present their projects. On 22-23/09/2022, she presented at the Benelux Congress of Zoology http://rbzs.be/benelux-congress-of-zoology/ a poster on “Differentiation of petrosourced plastic microfilaments from organic microfilaments by EDAX in environmental samples”. From that, she had seen the various research done in many universities such as UMons, University of Liege (ULiege), Free University of Brussels (ULB), and attended a workshop on “Pitching your research with impact” organized by the Floor is Yours.

In October 2022, she will attend the 12th Scientific Symposium of the West Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) https://symposium.wiomsa.org/ which will be held in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. During this event, she will give a poster presentation of her results. Attending these conferences, especially presenting one’s project, is important for a PhD training and allows the PhD student to improve his/her work by considering the criticisms and/or suggestions resulting from the exchanges made during these events.

Mais, comment avancent leurs travaux de recherche ?

Cette semaine, Mlle Lovasoa nous partage ses activités.

Dans le cadre de sa recherche sur l’évaluation des déchets plastiques en milieu marin et étude de la qualité des plastiques algosourcés, RAHARINAIVO Lovasoa Rina a surtout effectué son travail de terrain et une partie de son travail de laboratoire durant sa deuxième année de thèse (juillet 2021-juillet 2022). Sa première année a été un peu difficile à cause de la pandémie Covid19 et marqué par la rédaction de son projet de recherche, de son séjour de formation à l’Université de Mons (UMons) et de la rédaction des protocoles de recherche. Elle a bien mentionné cela lors de sa présentation lors de l’atelier de restitution du projet réalisé le 02/09/2022 à l’Institut Halieutique et des Sciences Marines (IH.SM) -Toliara, Madagascar.

Pour ce début de troisième année, la doctorante est repartie à l’UMons pour effectuer la deuxième partie de son travail de laboratoire qui exige du matériel plus sophistiqué en matière d’observation et d’analyse. En même temps, elle commence l’analyse des données collectées à Madagascar et à faire savoir son projet à travers des communications de ses résultats lors des conférences scientifiques internationales.

A ce propos, elle a assistéà la 11^ème édition du mardi des chercheurs pour présenter un poster sur « Vertical distribution of microplastics in sea off Sarodrano, southwestern Madagascar ». C’est un évènement interne organisé par l’UMons le 26/09/2022 pour permettre au doctorant de faire savoir leurs projets. Le 22 au 23/09/2022, elle était présente au Benelux Congress of Zoology http://rbzs.be/benelux-congress-of-zoology/ et a présenté un poster sur la « Differentiation of petrosourced plastic microfilaments from organic microfilaments by edax in environmental samples ». Ceci l’a permis de voir les diverses recherches faites dans beaucoup d’universités telles que l’UMons, l’université de Liege (ULiege), l’université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), et d’assister à un atelier sur la présentation de recherche “Pitching your research with impact” organisé par the Floor is Yours.

Prochainement, en octobre 2022, elle partira en Afrique du Sud pour assister au 12^ème symposium scientifique de l’association des sciences marines du Sud-Ouest de l’Océan Indien (WIOMSA) https://symposium.wiomsa.org/ lors de laquelle elle effectuera aussi une présentation de ses résultats sur poster. A savoir qu’assister à ces conférences, surtout présenter son projet, est important pour la formation doctorale et permet au doctorant d’améliorer son travail en prenant comptes des critiques et/ou suggestions issus des échanges faits durant ces évènements.
